We all know the number one cause of aging is sun damage…this is why it is important to know the facts about SPF and sunscreens in order to protect our skin from the harmful UV rays. One of the most commonly asked questions at Blooming Moon is: “ If my make-up has SPF in it, does that mean I am protected for the rest of the day? And is it as effective as wearing sunscreen?”
The answer to this question totally depends on the SPF in your make-up, and how much sun exposure you are going to have. Your face should always have between 20-50 SPF. Any less than that you are going to have to reapply more frequently and there are many different opinions on SPF effectiveness when you use an SPF over 50. If you are doing outdoor activity where you might perspire or swimming–a reapplication is necessary. We always suggest hats, sunglasses and long sleeves as the next step for protecting your face and body after sunscreen application. If you are wearing a moisturizer under your makeup it might prevent the SPF in your makeup from being as effective. So our suggestion is to apply sunscreen first, before any makeup thus, insuring you are getting the best coverage possible.
- Epicuren Zinc Oxide Perfecting Sunscreen SPF 27
- Epicuren X-treme Cream Propolis Sunscreen SPF 45
- Epicuren Sport Treat UVA & UVB Sunscreen SPF30+
All three of these are great bases to any makeup regimen. Putting sunscreen on before your make up insures that it gets down to your skin cells and truly protects. Any makeup with SPF in it is an added bonus. If you plan on being out in the sun for an extended period of time and don’t want to refresh your makeup with SPF there is at least one company that makes a spray facial sunscreen (which we highly recommend only using facial sunscreen for your face) and makes reapplying effortless and no need to continue reapplying makeup.
Everyone should be wearing SPF on a daily basis whether you want to prevent aging or just age gracefully, sunscreen ensures our skin is beautiful inside and out.
