Jacqueline Bohi Sheeran was born into a Catholic family of 3 girls and 2 boys in New Hampshire. She grew up smart, athletic and driven. Once college came around, she was ready to spread her wings, and once admitted to University of Utah, left town on her own, and was shacked up with an equally smart and driven gal for the entirety of their college education. My mother was not the only good egg out of her siblings, but she was certainly the most determined to be successful. While others dropped
out of school, married and had children, my mother continued paying her way through her Food Science College Degree while cocktail waitressing and bank telling. She definitely hit gender walls throughout her career. There wasn’t a single job she held that paid her a man’s wage, or offered her a man’s position, though often, those managing her had only a High School diploma to their name.
My mother graduated, worked as the Product Development Manager of Cookie Tree in Salt Lake City as the family bread-winner while she helped put my father through college. I was born right before h
e graduated, and they bought their first home together shortly after.
Mom has always been a huge proponent of educating yourself, and getting comfortable in a career before anything else. Before Babies, before mortgage payments, before marriages, divorces, etc. The MOST important thing is getting settled in a good job, even if you have to create that job yourself. Sometimes you really can’t break through that glass ceiling to management; especially when you’r
e a woman. So, my mother started her own business as a seamstress. First, sewing my sister and my figure skating dresses for competitions. Then, sewing and selling them to our friends, and now, making costumes for Blaze the Blazers Mascot, and multiple other mascots around the country.
She always wanted my sister and me to establish ourselves and have an identity outside of just a homemaker. The result: she raised two very confident, independent women (and one pretty-cool son. Haha.)
